Amy Donaldson is a Regional Clinical Training Manager for Cochlear Americas covering the Northeast and Great Lakes regions. She received her Master’s Degree in Audiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her AuD from the University of Florida. She was privileged to start her career as a pediatric and cochlear implant audiologist at the University of Michigan and also worked at the Manchester Cochlear Implant Programme in the UK. Having worked for several years as an Educational Audiologist and Technical Support Audiologist for a major hearing aid manufacturer, she returned to cochlear implants in 2011 as a Clinical Specialist for Cochlear.
The Cochlear™ Nucleus® family of cochlear implants* make use of bidirectional telemetry over a transcutaneous radio frequency (RF) link.
Neural Response Telemetry (NRT®) makes intracochlear recordings of the electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP, or neural response) using this bidirectional telemetry. The neural responses resulting from a stimulus presented at one location within the cochlea are recording from another intracochlear electrode. The complete NRT measurement uses only the NRT software (available in Custom Sound®) and the standard Nucleus clinical hardware, no additional equipment or software is required.
NRT is available only in the Nucleus Cochlear Implant portfolio and can be performed intraoperatively and post-operatively to assist with clinical management and programming.
What can NRT tell you?
The compound action potential is generated by specific neural populations in the cochlea and can tell you how responsive that neural population is to electrical stimulation. Additionally, NRT may correlate with audibility (an estimation of T-level and C-level stimulation) and be used as an objective assessment of auditory status over time. Combining NRT and behavioral information allows for a stronger correlation1 and the “profile” of the NRT can be used to generate a “scaled threshold profile” of the T and C levels with the absolute T- and C-levels determined by behavioral measures2.
How easy is it to perform?
Auto NRT® makes collection as simple as the push of a button and the data is automatically available to you in our Custom Sound software** whether the recordings are made intraoperatively or in the programming office. For more advanced parameter manipulation, audiologists can access Cochlear’s Custom Sound® EP software.
