Creating a Partnership with Private Practice Audiologists to Increase Access to Cochlear Implants
Presented by William Shapiro, Au.D., NYU Langone Cochlear Implant Center and Carissa Citro, Au.D., McGuire’s Hearing Centers
Thursday, April 15, 2021 @ 11:45AM – 12:15PM US EST
Historically, only audiologists employed by a large hospital or university clinic had the time and resources to devote to providing treatment for cochlear implant patients. However, the care model for this treatment has evolved over the years consistent with changes in candidacy, evaluation and treatment protocols. The goal of this session is to provide information on how the implant center and private practice audiologist can work together to get a program up and running while maximizing patient outcomes.
When is it the Best to Refer my Patient for a Cochlear Implant Evaluation?
Presented by Teresa Zwolan, Ph.D , Director, Cochlear Implant Program Michigan Medicine and Rene Gifford, Ph.D, Professor, Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Friday, April 16, 2021 @ 10:00AM – 10:30AM US EST
Approximately 10% of patients who could benefit from a cochlear implant (CI) receive one. We’ll review the Delphi CI process (Buchman et al., 2020) that resulted in CI consensus statements, with a focus on best practices related to awareness and identification of CI candidates. Additionally, we’ll review the 60/60 referral guideline, which recommends patients undergo a CI candidacy evaluation if they have an unaided PTA > 60 dBHL and/or an unaided word score < 60% in their better ear.
