What do Cochlear™ Nucleus® 24 implants and Android™ have in common?

July 30, 2018 by Jamie Schwartz

Nucleus 7

Cochlear is proud to announce the Cochlear™ Nucleus® 7 Sound Processor now has expanded features,  like Nucleus 24 Implant and Android™ compatibility. As of today, these new features are available for your patients and your clinic.

The Nucleus 7 Sound Processor is the world’s first and only cochlear implant sound processor you can control from your smartphone when using the Nucleus® Smart App.1,2 With the Nucleus Smart App, patients who value control and connectivity can monitor and adjust their settings, view personalized hearing information and even locate their missing sound processor. This can improve their overall hearing experience. 90% of users found it more convenient to control the sound processor with the Nucleus Smart App compared with a remote control.3

Now, the Nucleus Smart App is available for both iPhone® and Android™ users. And don’t forget, Android users can only stream audio to their sound processor with the Cochlear Phone Clip!

Release of Cochlear™ Custom Sound® 5.1

As of today, the newest version of our Cochlear™ Custom Sound® firmware is available for download. Custom Sound 5.1 gives your clinic the ability to enable all of these new expanded features. Because these expanded features are software-enabled, your existing Nucleus 7 recipients can upgrade simply by visiting you for programming. Keep an eye out for a blog post tomorrow about how to get this download the software.

Other expanded features for the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor include:

  • Nucleus 24 Implant compatibility – Cochlear strives to ensure all our customers have access to the latest technology. Now, for the first time, the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor is available for patients with a Nucleus 24 series Implant, helping to maintain our lifetime commitment promise to our recipients.
  • Clinician Enabled Performance – We understand that hearing in noise can be very challenging for patients with hearing loss. In order to better hear in these situations, Cochlear is proud to introduce ForwardFocus*. ForwardFocus is a clinician-enabled, user-activated performance feature designed to improve hearing performance in background noise for recipients 12 years of age or older.
  • Find my Sound Processor “Nearby” feature – parents and recipients now have an even better way to locate a missing sound processor with a greater degree of accuracy. This new feature within Find my Sound Processor displays how close the mobile device is to the switched on sound processor (the higher the green bar, the closer they are to the sound processor).

It may be possible to have decreased speech understanding when using ForwardFocus in a quiet environment. SNR-NR and WNR are approved for use with any recipient ages 6 years and older, who is able to 1) complete objective speech perception testing in quiet and in noise in order to determine and document performance 2) report a preference for different program settings.
