The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released their final decisions on HCPCS Level II coding applications for the 2017-2018 HCPCS coding cycle. Applications submitted in the most recent cycle included a number of requests by Cochlear to make modifications to the code set that would better accommodate reporting of replacement processors, parts, and accessories for all auditory osseointegrated implants currently available in the market (including the Baha® 5 SuperPower system and its components) and provide for a defined manner of reporting the external battery charger currently required for both the Nucleus® cochlear implant and Baha rechargeable batteries.
*CMS is aware that the actuator/transducer component often exists as an integral part of an external sound processor system and cannot be separately replaced. As we understand these changes, both L8691 and L8694 would be reported for replacement of the complete Baha external sound processor system, regardless of whether that external sound processor system is configured as one piece in which the actuator/transducer cannot be replaced or as separate components.
Below is an updated Cochlear Parts and Accessories coding resource. The guide includes those codes applicable to replacement parts and accessories for Cochlear Baha implants and Nucleus cochlear implants and incorporates all of the changes outlined above.
